Meet Susan Work of Homework Design Shop - an architectural design shop based in San Francisco. Susan and her husband Ben create striking and functional spaces for families and businesses all over the country. I met Susan through my network of creative women in SF and we immediately bonded over fashion - her outfits always inspire and delight me and I’m so excited to show you just a little glimpse into her beautiful home and covetable vintage collection. I think we may need to do 10 more of these shoots with her, her collection is that good. Enjoy just this little taste!

I love … ocean sounds, my child’s voice, that knowing look from dear friends, husband & wife businesses, toasted baguette, gold lamé, floral velvet upholstered on furniture, when the sale’s on sale.

What I love most about my job is … getting to work with my husband everyday. Having a consistent collaborator and partner with a complementary skill set keeps me checked, and our process more fun. I also love the range of styles we get to work with, as all our clients and projects are so different and span the gamut from Spanish Colonial, Millennial Pink Tea Shop, French Chateau, Coastal California, Eco Desert, to Modern Brutalism. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to explore such different styles and design for all types.

I’m always on the hunt for …flutter-sleeve slip dresses and good slouchy leather boots.

I love vintage because … every find is one of a kind. And when I come across a heart-palpitating heap of heavily-beaded crochet silk gowns with lace, fringe, and rhinestone adornment and one of them fits like a glove, that is the definition of winning the lottery to me.

The secret to finding good vintage is … never have expectations, and start with “just looking”. you never know what’ll find you.

I love how bold and architectural Susan’s vintage is!

My most treasured vintage piece is… a 60’s fitted bodice cocktail dress with a delicate black lace overlay with the old-school Bergdorf Goodman tag still intact— a piece I found during my college years when I first realized my bonafide love for vintage.

If I had a day all to myself … I’d run off to the spa and hide out in a steam room for relaxing hydrotherapy, then splurge on lunch for 1. In a vintage metallic embroidered coat and feathery slippers, of course.
